KL event venues: The Bee, Jaya One

Posted by Steph

As a small, agile and resourceful PR agency, the team at Commas & Industry inadvertently find themselves ankle-deep in every facet of public relations work. That includes managing events, of which a big part of the job is recommending appropriate venues to our clients.

Since we do this regularly, we thought it apt to begin a series of reviews of venues in Kuala Lumpur and the greater Klang Valley that are suitable for PR events.

If you’ve tried organising press conferences, product launches, or even casual meet-the-press sessions, you’ll know how stressful it is. From fixing dates, to preparing press-kits, from sending out invitations, to picking the appropriate venue; the whole process can be a nightmare for the inexperienced.

Of course, it’s why PR agencies like us exist – to do it so you don’t have to. But if you prefer to take things into your own hands and self-manage your PR events, then we hope our reviews will make your hunt for the perfect venue easier. This month we’ll begin with our review of The Bee, a cosy mid-size cafe located in Jaya One. Don’t forget to bookmark or subscribe to our RSS feed so you don’t miss the next one.

The Bee

Located in Jaya One, just by the elevator that takes you straight up to the PJ Live Arts Theatre, The Bee has become the rally point for PJ’s theatre goers and performing arts community. Run by the founder of KLue magazine, Adrian Yap, The Bee serves up short order favourites in a setting with all the hallmarks of a hipster hangout.

A five-panel towering chalkboard (that is sometimes imprinted with menu specials but always a shrine for vintage collectibles) acts as a backdrop for an anachronistic three-piece Victorian seating area. This area doubles up as a stage for guitar strumming musicians or any solo act of the night. Light-bulb clusters suspended from the tall ceiling give a warm and cosy mood. A brick-wall demarcates the kitchen, while long sturdy wooden tables paired with up-cycled shipping boxes add a makeshift touch.

That sounds cool but is it suitable for my event?

With its tall open ceiling and an entrance that spills out to the walkway, The Bee is good for small to mid-size events of a less formal kind. Think open mic nights, album launches and indie musician showcases, cosmetic brands targeting 20-somethings, promotional/awareness events for art movements, and even professional brands keen on taking a fresh approach for a launch.

The Bee also has comfortable sofa seating and their baristas aren’t cranking up the blenders to make frappucinos, this fantastic cafe is perfect for intimate Public Relations activities — from your media briefings and one-on-one interviews.

How about the size and privacy of a function/event?

The Bee can accommodate functions up to 80 pax**, if you don’t mind your guests spilling out of the cafe in typical underground gig fashion. But if you’re looking for a little privacy, The Bee will accomodate closed door functions of more than 30 pax. Hold your event during off-peak hours of 3 pm to 5 pm, and they may just make an exception.

Operating hours are 9 am to 11pm Monday through Thursdays, 9 am to 12am on Fridays and 10am to 12am on Saturdays. They’re closed on Sundays. Upon negotiation, clients are allowed to set up before opening/closing hours for their functions.

*All figures are an approximate, pending on seating and standing place.

Stage requirements: how many people can fit on stage, any sound systems provided?

The stage is about 20ft x 10ft which could probably fit a four-to-five-piece band. Depending on the F&B or rental agreement, The Bee provides basic back-line, which supports bands and acoustic performances.

Will they cater selected food for my event? What is the costing like?

The Bee will design a menu specific to your event. For tea-time and brunch events, expect canapes like turkey ham and tuna & cheese finger sandwiches, huevos rancheros chicken mini wraps and mini churros with chocolate & caramel sauce. If you’re treating your stakeholders to lunch, treat them a buffet spread with salt & pepper calamari with chips, beef bacon quesadillas, skewered teriyaki chicken wings and skewered coconut prawns with mint mango dip.

There is also an option of serving up a three-course meal for your guests, just ask The Bee for their set menu. The management is open to creative menu ideas and concepts! The Bee requires at least a week’s notice  to finalise each menu presented to the client, especially for functions for 50 pax or larger. However, a 3-4 days in advance will be sufficient for bookings below 50pax.

**Buffet starts from RM45++ per person, canapes from RM35++ per person and Set Menu from RM 40++ per person.

Is parking convenient?

There is ample basement and outdoor parking. The nearest available parking is on B1, near the PJ Live Arts (PJLA) elevator. Hourly and flat rate charges apply.
